Overview of the Directorate of Common Preparatory Program (Ditsama)

One of the outcomes of educational reform at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in the 1970s was the introduction of a standardized first-year curriculum for most undergraduate programs. To ensure the smooth implementation of this program, ITB established an organizational unit in 1973 called the Common Preparatory Stage Program (Program Tahap Persiapan Bersama or PTPB), led by a Head of PTPB at that time. This program aimed to provide first-year students with a strong foundation in science, arts, and technology, while also serving as an initial platform to foster scientific attitudes and facilitate adaptation to the academic culture of higher education.

Over time, the preparatory program underwent several significant changes, including curriculum development, organizational restructuring, increasing student enrollment, and revisions in the study program placement process. Currently, the number of students enrolled in the program reaches approximately 5,300 annually, necessitating efficient and standardized class management. In this context, the role of PTPB has been crucial in maintaining the quality and consistency of both academic instruction and administrative processes.

Starting in 2025, in line with the implementation of the 2024 Curriculum, PTPB has officially transformed into the Directorate of Common Preparatory Program (Direktorat Persiapan Bersama – Ditsama), led by a Director. This transformation reflects not only a change in organizational structure but also an expansion of its scope. Previously, the program focused primarily on managing foundational science courses in the first and second semesters. Now, Ditsama also oversees Institute Compulsory Courses (Mata Kuliah Wajib Institut – MKWI) and plays a greater role in student character development.

With a more holistic approach, Ditsama is committed to shaping students who are not only intellectually excellent but also responsible, adaptable, effective communicators, and capable of wise problem-solving.

Another major change in the 2024 Curriculum concerns the study program placement process. Beginning in 2025, placement into academic programs will no longer occur at the end of the first year (second semester) but instead at the end of the first semester. This placement will be based on students’ academic interests and achievements. Faculties and schools are actively involved in introducing their respective disciplines to help students choose study programs that best align with their interests and potential.

In addition, there is a shift in course management: first-semester preparatory courses are managed by Ditsama, while second-semester courses are handled directly by the respective academic programs.

As part of its commitment to supporting the academic transition process, Ditsama has launched the ITB Pre-University Program, a strategic initiative designed to help high school students and new undergraduates prepare for the challenges of university life. This program aims to cultivate interest in higher education, strengthen academic readiness, and develop essential skills required for success in university.

The ITB Pre-University Program comprises two main components:

  • Inspiring: Introducing students to the academic environment and learning experiences in higher education to inspire their aspirations.

  • Bridging: Bridging the gap between secondary and tertiary education through academic preparation and foundational skill-building.

Although our name has changed, our vision and spirit remain the same: to support and prepare students for academic success—not only intellectually but also in terms of personal character.
